Armchair Gossip

 With Carolyn Hughes

Tell me about yourself, who is Carolyn Hughes?

Welcome to my world!  My name is Carolyn Hughes and I am a freelance PR Consultant who found myself falling in love with the world of Lifestyle, Leisure and Retail PR almost 18 years ago.  Previously worked for Radio City and had a blissfully happy 13 years at what can only be described as a 'fun factory' in the hey-day of local radio, before taking the plunge into the wilderness of the Self Employed.  I have worked with Living Ventures and the teams behind some of the country’s most successful leisure brands including The Living Room, Mosquito, Life Cafe, GUSTO, Olive, Blackhouse Grill, Red Door, Smugglers Cove, and more recently The Club House.   I also work with the hugely successful and incredibly stylish Hilton Hotel Liverpool city centre, and have previously worked with Boodles, The [email protected] Hotel, David M. Robinson, Radio City, Cash for Kids, The Playground and many more.  It is not worth giving my age, as I would knock a few years off anyway (female perogative!) and I live in an apartment in the Docklands in Liverpool city centre, but my heart lives in Majorca.  Not married, no kids and no pets.

What is your all-time favourite film?

Shawshank Redemption - apart from the superb acting, it reminds us that ‘Good' always triumphs over 'Evil'.... it might take a while - but it ALWAYS does.

If you could be a Disney Character which one would you be and why?

Elsa - Her business plan is phenomenal.  She has literally cleaned up on everything from merchandise to kid’s parties and she has been responsible for giving parents all over the world some 'quiet time'!!  She would give Martha Lane Fox a run for her money.

Which celebrity do you get mistaken for?

Years ago I used to get Kate Bush - so I donned a wig to replicate it. As I have got older I have had Karen Brady, and over the years the comedian Helen Lederer

Which famous person would you like to cook dinner for?

Probably Tim Berners-Lee who is largely credited for inventing the internet as we know it today.  Many people played significant roles in getting the internet to the point where TBL introduced the WWW (World Wide Web) on the 6th August 1991.  My opinion is that the internet is the most amazing invention in society and the biggest danger to society  - so the conversation should be a fascinating one.

What song best describes your work ethic?

Oh dear this could be a different one on a daily basis, depending on my workload and my mood!!

I only work with people I think I can do a great job for and get results.  If you go solely for the money it can be a rather unpleasant collaboration.

If you could paint a picture what would you paint?

A sunset or a sunrise - I am obsessed with them.  I think a sunrise reminds us of how grateful we should be to wake up to a new day and a sunset makes me thankful for another day.  They are a natural beauty and cost nothing to see.  When I go away I always give them the respect they deserve and say a little thank you for their grace and beauty!  I always sleep with the curtains open in my apartment as I cannot think of a better way to start the day than to wake up to a beautiful sunrise from my pillow!  On a recent trip to Bangkok I got up super early and watched the Asian sunrise over a city that boasts 12 million dwellers and watched it come to life #beautiful and #memorable.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

Believe, Achieve, Receive.

What excites you?

When I hear the words Cabin Crew arm the doors for departure.

What scares you?

Illness - both parents died young.  Also Rats, I have a morbid fear of Rats.

What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received?

Best gift:   I get lovely things often so I try to appreciate them all for what they are and the fact that someone has thought about me.  It is not always about the size or price of the gift, but the fact that someone has considered what you like makes them special.   Worst Gift:  I could not possibly say as would not want to offend the person who gave it to me.

Have you recently changed your business, tell me what are doing?

Nope ....

What do you like and dislike about being self-employed?

Love the freedom to do what I want when I want (within reason, and deadlines permitting) but having no cut off point to the business side of your life, especially when your work is lifestyle and leisure can prove challenging - and the many levels of accessibility Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Messenger........ can be challenging.

What is your biggest regret?

Not starting my business earlier, but I guess everything happens for a reason.

If you could work with anyone in the world who would you choose?

Mark Zukerburg - to have so much power at the push of a button must be an awesome feeling. But 18 years of Tim Bacon, Dave Hinds, Jeremy Roberts and the LV team have taught me so much along with Radio City founder Terry Smith.

With Cheryl White

Tell me about yourself who you are?

My name is Cheryl White and I am the managing Director of Apollo Care (Franchising) Limited and Mercury Franchise Consultancy. In 2000 I gained my nursing degree and worked as a District Nurse for many years. I set up my home care company, Apollo Care in 2011 in response to the demand for good care services. The company soon grew and I decided to franchise the business in 2013. After the success of franchising my business, I am now helping other businesses to do the same. I have two beautiful boys, Daniel and William, two dogs, two chickens and a guinea pig.

What is your all-time favourite film?

Has to be the Wizard of Oz. I know every word to the film since I was a little girl with my favourite quote being “you have always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself”

If you could be a Disney Character which one would you be and why?

I would choose to be the little mermaid. It would be amazing to disappear under the sea! No Wi-Fi, no phones and no people.

Which celebrity do you get mistaken for?

Jennifer Ellison and some of my friends say I look like Cameron Diaz, Umm I am not so sure.

Which famous person would you like to cook dinner for?

Steven Gerrard, and invite my son along. Steven is my son’s idol and I would love to sit them down together so they could chat about all things football. I would serve dinner and enjoy the view.

What song best describes your work ethic?

That’s very difficult to answer. I believe in working hard to achieve what you have but also taking some time out for yourself. When I first came into business I was almost burnt out after 18 months because I was working so hard. I am now starting to understand that looking after me also helps look after my business interests too.

If you could paint a picture what would you paint?

A coast line, I love being near the coast. The sound and smell of the beach really calms me. I feel very lucky to live in an area surrounded by lovely coast line.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

Probably Surprise, I was told by lots of people that my first business wouldn’t work. I had no business background, but I took the plunge and went ahead anyway. After 5 years I have achieved more than I ever imagined. I am now helping others to build and grow their own businesses.

What excites you? Please keep it clean ha

Business planning excites me. I love getting all my ideas down on paper and creating goals to make things happen.

What scares you?

My biggest fear is not being around for my boys. I try to make as many happy memories with them as possible so they will look back on their childhood and know how much I loved them.

What is your biggest regret?

I used to try to please everybody all the time and wasted a lot of time doing it.  I still do it to a certain extent, but I am getting better at realising I am not responsible for making everybody happy.

If you could work with anyone in the world who would you choose?

The Queen, I think she is an amazing lady and seems totally in control at all time. I would also love to be invited to ride her horses.
